It Looks Like Meta Is Experimenting With Expanding The Field of View on Its VR Headsets
It looks like Meta is developing a VR headset prototype with a larger field of view than any of its current Meta Quest headsets. The company’s CTO is shown in a recently made public image inspecting some of the tests being conducted in Meta’s Reality Labs.
Meta is continuously testing new designs for its different peripherals, and occasionally pictures of these devices are leaked online or shared officially. An earlier photo of the CTO with the then-unannounced VR headset on a shelf behind him hinted at the Meta Quest 3S headset. According to a recent disclosure, the corporation is reportedly testing headphones with larger field of view.
In a photo posted to Instagram by Meta CTO Andrew Bosworth, astute observers saw that one of the headsets he was inspecting appeared to be very unusual. Instead than only fitting over the front of the face, the VR headset prototype in the picture appears to curve around the sides of the face. The tilted optics would significantly contribute to future headsets’ increased field of view. It’s interesting to see that Meta might be considering a larger field of view in the future, even if the design is obviously only meant to be a prototype because it is wired and has awkward attachments.
Will a Wide Field of View VR Headset Be Released by Meta?
Even though Meta is testing this, it doesn’t guarantee that it will reach customers. To figure out what would be a good feature and work effectively for its future goods, Meta is always testing and innovating. Recently, Meta canceled their La Jolla project, which was rumored to be the Meta Quest Pro 2 and would have competed with the Apple Vision Pro. The company does, however, have prototypes “at all times” and not everything is really produced, according to Bosworth. Before concepts ever reach the prototype level, the company goes through several stages of experimentation. Products may still be canceled by the corporation before they are ever made public, even after they have reached the final stage.
VR aficionados shouldn’t wait too long for Meta to release a wide FOV headset. There is currently no official word on a Meta Quest 4 or sequel as Meta is concentrating on the recent release of its Quest 3S. It would probably be several years before this prototype is officially launched, even if it passes all the stages.
